By now, you’ve probably seen a smart car tooling around town, no matter where in America you may live. They are tiny, usually seating just two people- and sometimes only one. They tend to come in bright colors- and they are so small and stubby as to be impossible not to stand out- especially on the highway. People who insist on size, power, and prestige from their automotive assets cringe at the sight of them. But the clear economic advantages of these strange new contraptions make their eventual rise inevitable. 

While there are clear advantages of these diminutive automotive alternatives- there are a few downsides as well. Here, we will weigh the pros and cons of driving, owning, and living with smart cars. 

The Advantages of Smart & Electric Cars

Of course, the advantages of smart and electric cars are many- otherwise, they would not have a growing presence on our roadways. 

 

1. Near Silent Operation

With the exception of a barely perceptible electric whirring, the engine of an electric car is almost totally silent. Sure, conventional automotive technology is quiet- but not without a well functioning muffler and properly enclosed exhaust system. Once these are compromised, conventional vehicles become extremely loud- and if you ignore a broken muffler too long, you’re bound to run into legal trouble.

 

2. Easier to Park

Because they are smaller in size, an electric car is much easier to comfortably maneuver into a parking space. You’ll also have more elbow room in your garage and driveway. Better still, narrower smart cars are less likely to be sideswiped by other vehicles when parked on the street.

 

3. More Environmentally Friendly

Because they are smaller and lighter, electric and smart vehicles will do less damage to any person or object with which they may collide. Therefore, the more of these are on the roads, the safer drivers will be in traffic.

These vehicles tend to be heavily computerized, web-connected, mobile app and cellular phone compatible. This gives the driver access to all kinds of advanced features such as eco-optimized operation guidance. The Volkswagen corporation, in particular, has made big strides in this regard with its Think Blue eco trainer, which helps the driver operate these cars in the most efficient way possible.

While the notion of a smart city is still somewhat far off, with plans in the works to integrate city infrastructure and 5G networks to work with smart cars, drivers of these machines can expect to gain a great deal of support.
